April 24, 2001 - McCall Trails Cuomo, But Cuts Gov's Lead In Half, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Pataki's Vieques Trip Misses Target With Voters
State Comptroller H. Carl McCall has cut Republican incumbent Gov. George Pataki's lead from 13 points to 7 points in the early rounds of the 2002 New York governor's race, but still trails former HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo in a Democratic primary, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Among Democrats, Cuomo gets 39 percent to McCall's 33 percent, with 26 percent undecided.

Gov. Pataki beats McCall in a general election matchup 43 - 36 percent, with 19 percent undecided. Pataki tops Cuomo 46 - 36 percent, with 16 percent undecided.

A March 28 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University, showed Pataki ahead of McCall 48 - 35 percent, and Pataki ahead of Cuomo 48 - 36 percent.

From April 17 - 22, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,105 New York State registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent. The survey includes 500 registered Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percent.

"Democrats give Cuomo a slight edge over McCall. But the Comptroller runs better against Gov. Pataki. It's early and things will change, and change again," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"He was elected as the ABC -- Anybody But (Mario) Cuomo -- candidate. He won a second term easily. If he seeks a third term, Gov. Pataki has an edge, but hardly an overwhelming lead over Andrew Cuomo or McCall."

Voters approve 58 - 27 percent of the job Pataki is doing as governor. This is down slightly from his 61 - 24 percent approval in the March 28 Quinnipiac University poll.

By a 45 - 19 percent margin, New York State voters have a favorable opinion of Pataki, with 28 percent mixed and 6 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. Favorability ratings for other possible candidates are:
                Favorable Unfavorable Mixed No Opinion

Cuomo 29% 15% 14% 40%
McCall 33 3 10 53

Only 52 percent of New York State voters say they read or heard anything about Gov. Pataki's trip to Vieques Island, off Puerto Rico, to protest the U.S. Navy's bombing exercises there.

Of that 52 percent, 44 percent approve of the Governor's trip, while 46 percent do not approve.

At the same time, New Yorkers who know about the trip, disapprove 61 - 24 percent of the U.S. Navy's bombing exercises in Vieques.

Only 16 percent of New Yorkers who know about the trip say the Vieques issue should be a high priority for Pataki, while 37 percent say it should be a low priority and 43 percent say it should not be a priority at all.

"New Yorkers share Gov. Pataki's belief that the Navy should stop using Vieques for target practice. But they're far from enthusiastic about Pataki's up close and personal involvement in the issue," Carroll said.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
