October 3, 2001 - Rebuild The World Trade Center, New York Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; 80 Percent Back Military Action Against Terrorists
By a 63 - 28 percent margin, New York State voters say the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey should rebuild the World Trade Center, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Quinnipiac University pollsters first explained to voters that the Trade Center was built and owned by the Port Authority, an agency controlled by the governors of New York and New Jersey. Then voters were asked if the Port Authority should rebuild the World Trade Center. In a September 26 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University, New Jersey voters said 65 - 26 percent that the Trade Center should be rebuilt.

From September 24 - 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,262 New York State registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent.

"Matching the response from New Jersey, which shares control of the Port Authority, New Yorkers say 2 - 1 that the bi-state agency should rebuild the World Trade Center," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

By an 80 - 11 percent margin, New York voters support military action against "groups or nations responsible for terrorist attacks."

And by a 64 - 24 percent margin, voters support military action "even if it means thousands of U.S. troops will be killed or wounded."

If the U.S. does not take military action, there is a greater risk of future terrorism in the U.S., 64 percent of New York voters say, while 23 percent say there is a greater terrorism risk if the U.S. does act.

"'Strike back,' four out of five New Yorkers say, although their zeal diminishes slightly when they consider the possibility of U.S. casualties. There also is strong feeling that it's riskier not to retaliate," Carroll said.

"And New Yorkers are confident the U.S. can find and punish the people who did this to us."

Forty-three percent of voters are "very confident" the U.S. will find and punish the people responsible for the terrorist attacks, while 47 percent are "somewhat confident;" 8 percent are "not too confident," and 1 percent are "not confident at all."

Nineteen percent of New York voters are "very worried" that they or a family member will become a victim of terror, while 42 percent are "somewhat worried;" 27 percent are "not too worried," and 10 percent are "not worried at all."

Because of recent terrorist attacks:
  • 38 percent of state voters are less likely to fly, while 56 percent are not less likely;
  • 42 percent of voters are less confident in the economy, while 15 percent are more
confident and 38 percent say their feelings haven't changed.

New York State voters split 44 - 47 percent on reinstating the military draft.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
