November 14, 2001 - Giuliani Should Run For Governor, New York Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Pataki Tops Dem Challengers 2 -1
New York State voters give Mayor Rudolph Giuliani a huge 89 - 8 percent approval rating, and say 57 - 32 percent that Giuliani should run for governor in 2002, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Gov. George Pataki has a 78 - 12 percent approval rating among registered voters and tops either of his likely Democratic challengers by more than 2 -1. If the 2002 election for governor were held today:
  • Pataki tops State Comptroller H. Carl McCall 56 - 24 percent;
  • Pataki beats former U.S. Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo 57 - 25 percent.
In a Democratic primary, Cuomo beats McCall 37 - 29 percent, with 30 percent undecided.

From November 7 - 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,207 New York State registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent. The survey includes 481 registered Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percent.

"New York State voters continue to hold Mayor Giuliani in high esteem. He's so good leading New York City, most voters say, that he should take a shot at leading New York State," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"And the second most popular New York leader after Giuliani is Gov. Pataki."

"If Giuliani stays out of the governor's race - as he said he would - then Pataki is looking very good," Carroll said.

"The state Democratic boss had suggested that either H. Carl McCall or Andrew Cuomo pull out of the run for governor to avoid a divisive primary fight. Maybe they both should pull out, since Pataki beats either one 2 - 1."

President Bush enjoys an 82 - 15 percent approval rating among New York voters. Only 26 percent of New Yorkers would like Giuliani to run for President, while 57 percent say no.

Pataki has a 63 - 9 percent favorability rating, with 21 percent mixed and 6 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. Favorability ratings for other New York State leaders are:
              Favorable     Unfavorable     Mixed     No Opinion
Giuliani        80%             6%           11%          2%
McCall          25              3             8          62
Cuomo           21             15            13          49
Sen. Schumer    43             10            17          29
Sen. Clinton    37             29            17          15
