November 6, 2000 - Clinton Jumps To Big 51 - 39 Percent Lead In New York Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Gore Tops Bush 55 - 34 Percent
First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton has opened up a big 51 - 39 percent lead over U.S. Rep. Rick Lazio among New York State likely voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Nine percent are undecided.

Mrs. Clinton had 47 percent to Rep. Lazio's 44 percent in an October 31 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University. Previous Quinnipiac University polls showed Clinton with a 50 - 43 percent lead among likely voters.

Vice President Al Gore leads Texas Gov. George W. Bush 55 - 34 percent, with 5 percent undecided.

From November 1 - 5, Quinnipiac University surveyed 979 New York State likely voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent.

Clinton gets 44 percent of upstate likely voters to Lazio's 45 percent, a tie; Lazio leads 51 - 41 percent in the suburbs, while Clinton leads 70 - 22 percent in New York City.

Two key voting blocks have shifted strongly to Clinton in the last week of the campaign: white women back her 49 - 40 percent, while Jewish voters support Clinton 71 - 19 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.

Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, is available to discuss these results.
