December 27, 2000 - Most New York Voters Satisfied With Life As Year Ends, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Taxes, Economy/Jobs, Schools Are Seen As Biggest Problems
Thirteen percent of New York voters are "very satisfied" with life in the state as the year ends, while 57 percent are "somewhat satisfied," according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Another 20 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" and 8 percent are "very dissatisfied."

In an open-ended question, where voters can give any answer, a total of 18 percent list taxes as the most important problem facing New York, followed by 16 percent who list education or school funding.

Among upstate voters the problem listed by the most voters -- 27 percent -- was unemployment or the economy. Statewide, 15 percent list this as the most important problem.

Only 4 percent list crime, violence or drugs, including 7 percent in New York City listing crime, an issue which had been on the top of the list in recent years.

"Upstate, the biggest worries are jobs and taxes. In the suburbs, they worry about schools and taxes. In New York City, which supposedly has the highest taxes around, only 5 percent list this as the biggest problem. But 21 percent of New York City voters list schools," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

From December 5 - 11, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,063 New York State registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.

A total of 81 percent of voters say New York's overall quality of life is "good" or "excellent." Looking at different components of that quality of life:
  • 66 percent say the economy is "good" or "excellent," while 32 percent say it is "not so good" or "poor;"
  • 42 percent say public schools are "good" or "excellent," while 52 percent say they are "not so good" or "poor;"
  • 47 percent say race relations are "good" or "excellent," while 50 percent say they are "not so good" or "poor;"
  • 59 percent say the environment is "good" or "excellent," while 39 percent say it is "not so good" or "poor."
"We like it here, New Yorkers tell the Quinnipiac University poll. But we're not at all happy with the performance of the public schools or the state of race relations," Carroll said.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
