February 9, 2005 - Clinton Thumps Pataki, Edges Giuliani In Reelect Bid, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; New York Voters Say 2 -1 She's Honest
Sen. Hillary Clinton gets an all-time high 65 - 27 percent approval rating from New York State voters, who say 64 - 30 percent that she is honest and trustworthy, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Among Republicans, 38 percent say she is honest, along with 85 percent of Democrats and 55 percent of independent voters.

Judging Clinton on other character traits, New York voters say:
  • 74 - 22 percent that she has strong leadership qualities;
  • 65 - 30 percent that she cares about their needs and problems.
Looking at her 2006 reelection bid, Sen. Clinton tops Republican Gov. George Pataki 61 - 30 percent, and edges former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani 50- 44 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

New York State voters split 46 - 48 percent on whether Clinton should run for President in 2008, but Democrats support a White House bid 67 - 27 percent.

"Remember when Sen. Hillary Clinton took office four years ago? Her husband had just pardoned Marc Rich and the Clintons were accused of looting White House furniture. Now? Two-thirds of New Yorkers say she's a good - and honest - Senator," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"State Republican leaders want Mayor Giuliani to challenge Sen. Clinton next year, and that could be a close race. But Clinton would bury Gov. Pataki."

In another question, offering four choices for Clinton's future. a total of 55 percent of Democratic voters say she should run for President in 2008. Results are:
  • 35 percent of Democrats say she should run for reelection as Senator in 2006;
  • 13 percent say she should run for President in 2008;
  • 42 percent of Democrats, say she should run for both Senator and President;
  • 7 percent say she should not run for either office.
"'Go for it all,' New York Democrats urge Sen. Clinton. Run for reelection or run for President, or do a two-fer with a Senate run in '06 and a White House run in '08," Carroll said. "Obviously, Republican and independent voters are less enthused."

A total of 82 percent of New York voters heard only a little or nothing at all about Sen. Clinton's recent speech calling for "common ground" on abortion. Voters say 55 - 39 percent that it is not possible to find that "common ground."

Asked their attitudes on abortion, New York State voters say:
  • 25 percent that abortion should be legal in all cases;
  • 37 percent that abortion should be legal in most cases;
  • 20 percent that abortion should be illegal in most cases;
  • 11 percent that abortion should be illegal in all cases.
Asked another way, voters say:
  • 46 percent that abortion should be generally available to those who want it;
  • 36 percent that abortion should be available, but with stricter limits than at present;
  • 15 percent that abortion should not be permitted.
Looking at specific abortion questions:
  • Voters support 64 - 27 percent a 24-hour waiting period for an abortion;
  • Voters support 70 - 25 percent parental notification for minors seeking an abortion;
  • Voters oppose 66 - 22 percent so-called partial birth abortion, except to save the life of the mother.
From February 3 - 7, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,218 New York State registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
