February 10, 2005 - Gov. Pataki Gets Lowest Approval Ever, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Many Think He Could Get 2008 GOP Presidential Nod
New York State voters give Gov. Pataki a negative 34 - 49 percent approval rating, his lowest score ever, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Republicans give him a 53 - 32 percent approval, while Democrats disapprove 61 - 25 percent and independent voters disapprove 49 - 32 percent.

This compares to a 44 - 41 percent approval for Gov. Pataki in a December 8, 2004, poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

If Pataki seeks a fourth term next year, he trails Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, his likely Democratic challenger, 54 - 30 percent.

Spitzer has a 61 - l3 percent approval rating.

While New Yorkers say 78 - 15 percent that they would not like to see Pataki run for President in 2008, a total of 45 percent of voters say it is "very likely" or "somewhat likely" that he will get the Republican nomination.

"The third time is far from charming for Gov. Pataki. And if he seeks a fourth term, Eliot Spitzer looks like he trounces the Governor," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Politicians say Pataki has his eye on the White House. While few New Yorkers want him to run, a fairly high minority thinks their Governor would play well to Republicans in Peoria."

When New York voters look at four choices for Pataki's future, results are:
  • 27 percent say he should run for reelection as Governor in 2006;
  • 3 percent say he should run for President in 2008;
  • 6 percent say he should run for both Senator and President;
  • 58 percent, including 42 percent of Republicans, say he should not run for either office.
Looking at another top New York Republican, voters say 50 - 43 percent that they do not want former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to run for President.

Pataki is a moderate, 43 percent of voters say, while 14 percent see him as a liberal and 30 percent say he's a conservative.

Judging his character traits, New Yorkers say:
  • 50 - 43 percent that he has strong leadership qualities;
  • 50 - 39 percent that he is honest and trustworthy;
  • 56 - 37 percent that he does not care about their needs and problems.
A total of 40 percent of New York State voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way things are going in the state, while 60 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied."

Satisfaction is highest, 51 percent, in the New York City suburbs, and lowest, 22 percent, in upstate urban areas.

The economy is the most important problem in New York, 23 percent of voters say, followed by 18 percent who list taxes and 11 percent who list education.

From February 3 - 7, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,218 New York State registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
