May 4, 2005 - Gov. Pataki Gets No Bounce From On-Time Budget, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Spitzer Tops Governor By 20, Weld By 40
New York State Gov. George Pataki struggles with a negative 36 - 47 percent approval rating, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Republicans give him a 55 - 33 percent approval, while Democrats disapprove 56 - 27 percent and independent voters disapprove 48 - 32 percent.

This compares to a negative 34 - 49 percent approval rating, Gov. Pataki's lowest ever, in a February 10 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, the likely Democratic candidate for Governor next year, leads Pataki 53 - 32 percent, compared to 54 - 30 percent February 10.

Spitzer buries possible Republican candidate William Weld 60 - 16 percent.

Spitzer has a 57 - 17 percent approval rating.

"The state budget was on time. The shrubbery on the State Capitol lawn is in bloom. The Legislature is preparing for a real summer vacation. And still Pataki's job approval is in the soup just as it was when we last looked in the gloom of winter," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"As awareness of Spitzer's likely candidacy grows, his gargantuan lead against Pataki takes a predictable slide from the last time we looked. But it's still huge.

"The Weld-for-governor talk hasn't stirred much interest except among political junkies."

Looking at Pataki's future options, New Yorkers say:
  • 77 - 16 percent that they would not like him to run for President;
  • 61 - 27 percent that they would not like him to run for Vice President;
  • 46 - 40 percent that he would be a "good choice" for a top position in the Bush Administration.
If Pataki does leave before his term is up, only 4 percent of New York State voters even know the name of the person who would replace him - Lt. Gov. Mary Donohue.

Grading the Governor, 3 percent of voters give Pataki an 'A,' with 26 percent who give him a 'B,' 43 percent who give a 'C,' 18 percent with a 'D,' and 8 percent with an 'F.'

A total of 38 percent of New York State voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way things are going in the state, while 61 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied."

"New Yorkers don't want Pataki to run for President or for Vice President. Many of them do think he'd be a good choice for an appointment by President George W. Bush," Carroll said.

"But only, it seems, if he first serves out his full term. The lieutenant governor - most New Yorkers don't know her name - is as close to anonymous as an official can get."

Manhattan Football/Olympic Stadium

New York State voters oppose 51 - 40 percent a proposal to build a stadium on Manhattan's West Side for the New York Jets and the 2012 Summer Olympics. But 74 percent of voters say it is "very likely" or "somewhat likely" the stadium will be built.

From April 28 - May 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,191 New York State registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
