April 25, 1999 - Support For Ground Troops In Kosovo At 50 Percent, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; New Yorkers Approve Of How Clinton Is Handling Crisis
By a 50 - 43 percent margin, with 8 percent undecided, New York State voters favor sending U.S. ground troops into Kosovo if air strikes are not effective in achieving U.S. policy there, according to a Quinnipiac College poll released today.

Voters approve 56 - 32 percent of the way President Clinton is handling the situation in Yugoslavia involving Serbia and Kosovo. Republican voters are split 45 - 45 percent in their approval, while Democrats approve 68 - 19 percent.

Clinton's overall approval is 61 - 34 percent, with Republicans going almost 2 - 1 negative, or 33 - 61 percent, while Democrats approve 84 - 12 percent.

"Republican voters don't think President Clinton is doing a good job overall, but they rally somewhat on his handling of Kosovo, a foreign country where Americans are involved in air combat," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac College Polling Institute.

From April 14 - 20, Quinnipiac College surveyed 1,128 New Yorkers who say they are registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percent. The Quinnipiac College Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
