January 20, 2006 - Women Back Sen. Clinton's Reelection More Than 3 - 1, Quinnipiac University New York State Poll Finds; Pirro Trails Cuomo, Green, Even With Women Voters
As she begins her reelection year, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton leads either of her two possible Republican challengers 2 -1, with a lead among women voters of more than 3 - 1, according to a Quinnipiac University poll of New York State voters released today.

Sen. Clinton tops Edward Cox 60 - 29 percent. She leads 69 - 20 percent among women and 49 - 40 percent among men, 88 - 7 percent among Democrats and 59 - 26 percent among independent voters, while Cox leads 63 - 23 percent among Republicans, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

Clinton also tops former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer 60 - 30 percent, with similar margins among the subgroups.

New York State voters approve 60 - 32 percent of the job she is doing and 59 percent say she has been a "great" or "good" Senator, while 38 percent rate her "so-so" or "bad."

"Sen. Hillary Clinton says she's not thinking about 2008, but she might as well be. She doesn't seem to have any political problems in 2006. Her job approval rating is high and her would-be opponents are anonymous," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

By a 51 - 28 percent margin, voters have a favorable opinion of Clinton, with 17 percent mixed and 4 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

For Cox, 75 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion and 84 percent haven't heard enough about Spencer.

In the race for New York State Attorney General, Westchester District Attorney Jeanine Pirro trails either of her possible Democratic opponents, falling behind Andrew Cuomo 48 - 33 percent, including 54 - 26 percent among women. Men voters are tied, with 42 percent for Pirro and 41 percent for Cuomo.

Mark Green is ahead of Pirro 42 - 35 percent, leading 47 - 29 percent among women, but Pirro leads 42 - 36 percent among men.

"Jeanine Pirro's flip-flop on what race she's running has hurt - but not wrecked - her chances of being attorney general. She gets only the generic Republican vote against either Andrew Cuomo or Mark Green. But they don't overwhelm her," Carroll said.

Pataki, Bush Approval Ratings

New York State voters give Gov. George Pataki a 43 - 40 percent approval rating, down from 49 - 38 percent in a December 14, 2005, Quinnipiac University poll.

If Gov. Pataki runs for President in 2008, 30 percent of New York State voters say they "definitely" or "probably" will vote for him, while 61 percent say they "probably" or "definitely" will not vote for him.

If Pataki is the Republican candidate for Vice President in 2008, 15 percent of New York State voters say they are more likely to vote Republican, while 24 percent say they are less likely and 56 percent say this would not affect their vote.

New York State voters disapprove 62 - 33 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, and say 57 - 34 percent that going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do.

From January 10 - 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,095 New York State registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
