October 4, 2006 - Spitzer Buries Unknown Faso More Than 3-1 In Gov Race, Quinnipiac University New York State Poll Finds; Hevesi Little Known, But Tops GOP Challenger 3-1
In their race for New York Governor, State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer leads Republican candidate John Faso 73 - 21 percent among likely voters, including leaners, with 5 percent undecided, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Among registered voters, Spitzer leads 69 - 18 percent. This compares to a 65 -17 percent Spitzer lead in an August 23 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University.

In this latest survey, Republican likely voters back Faso 54 - 40 percent, as Democrats back Spitzer 94 - 3 percent and independent voters line up with the Democrat 75 - 18 percent.

New York State voters approve 65 - 18 percent of the job Spitzer is doing as Attorney General and give him a 49 - 9 percent favorability, with 17 percent mixed and 24 percent who don't know enough to form an opinion.

For Faso, 73 percent don't know enough to form an opinion.

"The big number in Spitzer vs. Faso isn't really the wipe-out depicted in the vote - it's Faso's Anonymity Quotient. Voters don't dislike him. Three out of four voters just don't know much about him," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Spitzer's eight years as Attorney General give him the experience needed to fix New York State government, 63 percent of voters say, while 17 percent say his time in Albany makes him part of the problem.

"New Yorkers apparently identify Spitzer as the sheriff of Wall Street, not as part of the dysfunctional Albany government. Almost two-thirds of them think his AG experience qualifies him to be governor," Carroll said. State Comptroller's Race

New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi, a Democrat, leads Republican challenger J. Christopher Callaghan 59 - 21 percent among likely voters.

Hevesi gets only a 37 - 23 percent job approval rating and a 23 - 8 percent favorability, with 21 percent mixed and 47 percent who haven't heard enough about him to form an opinion.

But Callaghan is virtually unknown, with 88 percent of voters saying they don't know enough about him to form an opinion.

"If the news about Comptroller Hevesi charging his wife's chauffeur to the state had come earlier, it might have made for an interesting race, but Callaghan is about as anonymous as a state candidate can be," Carroll said.

From September 26 - October 1, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,627 New York State registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. The survey includes 1,263 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research.
