June 5, 2014 - Clinton Is Queen Of 2016 Pennsylvania Prom, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Obama Can't Find Way Out Of Approval Mineshaft
PDF format

In an early look at the 2016 White House race, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is holding her own - and then some - in the critical swing state of Pennsylvania, edging New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie and leading other possible Republican presidential contenders in a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Secretary Clinton tops Governor-next-door Christie 45 - 41 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. She leads 51 - 37 percent among women, while men go to Christie 45 - 38 percent.

The Democrat tops other Republicans:
  • 51 - 37 percent over U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. Women back Clinton 56 - 30 percent while men are divided 45 - 45 percent;
  • 51 - 36 percent over former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Clinton leads 56 - 32 percent among women and 46 - 41 percent among men;
  • 51 - 35 percent over former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, including 57 - 31 percent among women and 45 - 39 percent among men;
  • 50 - 38 percent over U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Women go Democratic 55 - 31 percent, while men are divided, with 44 percent for Clinton and 45 percent for Ryan.
"While hope for the presidency may be a bridge too far for New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie, other Republican White House hopefuls are finding even less traction when matched against Secretary Hillary Clinton," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Pennsylvania voters give Clinton a 55 - 40 percent favorability rating, including 61 - 33 percent among women.

Christie gets a 45 - 36 percent favorability, with negative or split scores for other Republicans:
  • Negative 29 - 33 percent for Paul;
  • 31 - 30 percent for Huckabee;
  • Negative 27 - 36 percent for Bush;
  • 32 - 33 percent for Ryan. President Obama Approval
Keystone State voters give President Barack Obama a negative 44 - 53 percent job approval rating, compared to a negative 42 - 54 percent score in a February 27 Quinnipiac University poll.

Women are divided 47 - 48 percent, while men give a negative 40 - 58 percent rating. Negative approval is 13 - 86 percent among Republicans and 32 - 63 percent among independent voters, while Democrats approve 78 - 18 percent.

"President Barack Obama gets the smallest of approval bumps in Pennsylvania but, as is the case in every state where Quinnipiac University conducts surveys, he continues to wallow in the weeds," Malloy said.

Approval ratings remain low for both of Pennsylvania's U.S. Senators:
  • Sen. Robert Casey Jr. gets a 44 - 27 score, compared to 47 - 33 percent February 27;
  • Sen. Pat Toomey has a 41 - 27 percent approval today, compared to 43 - 33 percent.
From May 29 - June 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,308 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
