July 14, 2004 - Kerry Gets Edwards Bounce In Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; War Emerging As Biggest Problem For U.S.
One week after his selection of John Edwards as his running mate, Democratic challenger John Kerry has jumped to a 46 - 41 percent lead over President George W. Bush among Pennsylvania voters, with 5 percent for independent candidate Ralph Nader, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

President Bush had 43 percent to Sen. Kerry's 44 percent, with 7 percent for Nader, in a June 24 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University.

This is Kerry's biggest movement in Pennsylvania since he emerged in March as the likely Democratic nominee, trailing Bush 44 - 40 percent in a March 17 Quinnipiac University poll.

Bush's job approval is stuck at a negative 45 - 52 percent, compared to a negative 45 - 53 percent June 24.

"Sen. Kerry's rise is in part due to his selection of John Edwards as his running mate, with a majority of voters saying the North Carolina Senator will help the Democrat's chances of election. Edwards appears to be giving the Democratic ticket a vital boost among voters in the central and southwest parts of the state," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"The new poll also shows Kerry gaining nine points in less than a month among union households and six points among women. This is the kind of coalition Kerry needs to keep together to carry this key battleground state in November. President Bush's reelection drive is hampered by a negative approval rating and a majority saying going to war with Iraq was the wrong thing to do," Richards said.

Voters say 51 - 43 percent that going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do, similar to the June 24 findings.

In an open-ended question, where voters can give any answer, 29 percent list the war as the most important problem facing the nation today, followed by 20 percent who list the economy or jobs and 12 percent who list terrorism or security.

Kerry would do a better job on the situation in Iraq, 46 percent of voters say, while 45 percent say Bush. Bush would do a better job on terrorism, voters say 51 - 39 percent. Kerry would do a better job on the economy, voters say 53 - 39 percent. Senate Race

In the Senate race, incumbent Republican Sen. Arlen Specter holds a 51 - 36 percent lead over U.S. Rep. Joseph Hoeffel, the Democratic challenger, unchanged from June 24.

Pennsylvania voters give Specter a 37 - 23 percent favorability rating, with 29 percent mixed and 10 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. Hoeffel gets a 12 - 7 percent favorability rating, with 14 percent mixed and 66 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

"Sen. Specter continues to hold a comfortable lead over Congressman Hoeffel who still is struggling to make his name known across the state," Richards said.

From July 6 - 11, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,577 Pennsylvania registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and the nation as a public service and for research. For additional data -- www.quinnipiac.edu and quicklinks
