July 24, 2002 - Rendell Widens Lead In Pennsylvania Gov Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Democrat Tops Republican On Key Issues
As bad feelings from the primary campaign fade, more Pennsylvania Democrats are lining up behind Ed Rendell in his race for Governor, helping to give him a 49 – 36 percent lead over Republican State Attorney General Mike Fisher, according to Quinnipiac University's poll released today.

In a June 5 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University, Rendell led Fisher 45 – 37 percent.

Since June, Democratic support for Rendell has gone from 69 percent to 75 percent, helping push him close to the magic 50 percent mark overall.

The Democrat leads 85 – 8 percent in Philadelphia and 66 – 26 percent in the suburbs and ties Fisher 42 - 41 percent in Allegheny County, Fisher's home base. Fisher leads in traditionally Republican central Pennsylvania 45 – 35 percent.

From July 16 - 22, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,176 Pennsylvania registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percent.

"Mayor Rendell has widened his lead and is seen as the best candidate to handle the major issues facing the state. He also is perceived 2 - 1 as having stronger leadership qualities – a strength voters are looking for after Sept. 11," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"But with President Bush waiting in the wings to campaign for Fisher and a multi- million dollar advertising campaign expected by both contenders, this race has hardly begun," Richards added.

Rendell's favorability is 38 - 21 percent among registered voters, with 20 percent mixed and 20 percent saying they haven't heard enough to form an opinion, unchanged from the June 5 Quinnipiac University poll.

Fisher gets an 18 – 7 percent favorability rating, with 15 percent mixed and 58 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. In the June 5 poll, 62 percent had no opinion on Fisher.

Pennsylvania voters approve 68 – 25 percent of the job President Bush is doing, down from 73 – 21 percent June 5.

Rendell has stronger leadership qualities, voters say 54 – 26 percent, and cares more about the problems of people like them, voters say 44 – 30 percent.

"The summer's half over and Fisher still has not been able to conquer his name recognition problem. The election is less than four months away and more than half of Pennsylvania voters say they do not know enough about him to form an opinion," Richards said.

Property tax reform is an "extremely important" issue in influencing how they vote, 56 percent of Pennsylvania voters say; 61 percent also say education is "extremely important" and 57 percent say the economy is "extremely important."

Asked which candidate would do a better on these key issues, Rendell tops Fisher:
  • 40 - 30 percent on property tax reform;
  • 43 - 32 percent on education;
  • 44 - 31 percent on the economy.
