December 13, 2005 - Rendell Approval Is Up In Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Bush Support Hurts Santorum, Voters Say 2 - 1
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who has seen his approval ratings slip throughout the year, is back at 51 - 35 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. The Governor started the year with a 51 - 33 percent approval in a February 17 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University, and dropped to 46 - 38 percent by October 5.

Rendell has a 38 - 27 percent favorability, with 27 percent mixed. Looking at some of the possible challengers, most voters say they don't know enough to form an opinion: The Governor leads these Republican challengers:
  • 48 - 36 percent over former Lt. Gov. Bill Scranton;
  • 48 - 35 percent over former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann;
  • 52 - 27 percent over State Sen. Jeff Piccola;
  • 53 - 24 percent over Jim Panyard, former head of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association.
"The fact that Gov. Rendell's approval rating is back over the 50 percent mark, while that of the legislature remains in the basement, shows that 'Teflon Ed' isn't taking much grief for signing the ill-fated legislative pay raise or the failure to so far produce property tax relief. But come reelection time next year, expect voters to hold him to his original campaign pledge to lower property taxes in his first term," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Voters disapprove 57 - 30 percent of the job the State Legislature is doing.

In a Republican primary for Governor, Swann has opened an early 31 - 23 percent lead over Scranton, with 5 percent for Piccola, 2 percent for Panyard, with 37 percent undecided.

In the 2006 race for U.S. Senate, Democratic State Treasurer Robert Casey holds a 50 - 38 percent lead over Republican incumbent Sen. Rick Santorum. Santorum leads 69 - 20 percent among Republicans, while Casey leads 78 - 12 percent among Democrats and 48 - 37 percent among independent voters. This compares to a 52 - 34 percent Casey lead in an October 6 Quinnipiac University poll.

When it is pointed out to pro-choice Casey voters that he and Santorum both oppose legalized abortion, 63 percent of the Democrat's supporters say they still will vote for him, while 22 percent say they will not vote in this race.

Santorum gets a 35 - 28 percent favorability rating, with 21 percent mixed and 14 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

Casey gets a 40 - 6 percent favorability rating, with 18 percent mixed and 34 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

Pennsylvania voters disapprove 59 - 38 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing. And by a 60 - 27 percent margin, voters say Santorum's support of President Bush hurts his chances for reelection. Even 36 percent of Republicans say supporting Bush hurts Santorum.

"The flare-up over some of Senator Santorum's more controversial positions seems to have died down somewhat. But President Bush is clearly hurting Santorum in Pennsylvania and he's still further behind than an incumbent should be entering the campaign year. Santorum's best hope is for a third party abortion rights candidate to emerge and pull Democratic votes from Casey," Richards said.

From November 30 - December 6, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,447 Pennsylvania voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. The survey includes 633 Republican voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.9 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida and the nation as a public service and for research.
