November 19, 2013 - Colorado Gov Has Early Lead In Reelect Bid, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Voters Back Fracking, Mixed Signals On Gun Control
PDF format

Colorado voters give Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper a split approval rating and more voters say he does not deserve to be reelected, but he has small leads against possible Republican challengers in an early look at the 2014 governor's race, according to a Quinnipiac University poll completed last night and released today.

Gov. Hickenlooper gets a 48 percent approval rating, while 46 percent disapprove, almost identical to his 48 - 44 percent approval rating in an August 23 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Voters say 49 - 42 percent today that the governor does not deserve reelection, also little changed from August.

But Hickenlooper edges four possible GOP challengers:
  • 46 - 41 percent over former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo;
  • 45 - 40 percent over Secretary of State Scott Gessler;
  • 44 - 38 percent over State Sen. Greg Brophy;
  • 44 - 40 percent over former State Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp.
In each case, independent voters are almost evenly divided between the candidates.

"Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper does not have much room to breathe the Rocky Mountain air, and certainly no clear sailing back to the statehouse. With the election a year away, he has slight leads over his Republican challengers and a mixed approval rating, but 9 in 10 voters list jobs as a top priority and the new gun control laws sit very badly with Colorado gun owners," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Almost half of Colorado voters don't want to give Gov. Hickenlooper four more years, but they seem to like the other guys a little less."

A total of 53 percent of Colorado voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way things are going in the state, while 46 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied."

The economy/jobs is the most important issue for Colorado voters, as a total of 89 percent say it is "extremely important" or "very important," looking at other issues:
  • 77 percent say education is extremely or very important;
  • 68 percent say gun policy is extremely or very important;
  • 68 percent say taxes are extremely or very important;
  • 47 percent say fracking is extremely or very important;
  • 33 percent say the death penalty is extremely or very important.
In one question Colorado voters oppose "the stricter new gun control laws" 55 - 40 percent. But voters support 85 - 14 percent requiring background checks for all gun-buyers. And 49 percent of voters support a statewide ban on the sale of ammunition magazines holding more than 15 rounds, while 48 percent are opposed.

Voters statewide oppose 49 - 38 percent the recall of State Sen. Evie Hudak for supporting stricter new gun control laws. Voters oppose 57 - 36 percent recall efforts for legislators with whom they don't agree, saying they should wait for the regular reelection.

With a large gender gap, Colorado voters support fracking for natural gas and oil 51 - 34 percent. Men support it 60 - 30 percent while women are divided with 42 percent for fracking and 38 percent opposed. Support is 80 - 9 percent among Republicans 51 - 32 percent among independent voters, while Democrats are opposed 54 - 26 percent.

"Voters don't like gun control, or maybe they just don't like the words, 'gun control,'" Malloy said. "There's some support for limiting multi-round magazines, and overwhelming support for background checks."

From November 15 - 18, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,206 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
