February 10, 2014 - Legalized Marijuana Hurts Colorado's Image, Slim Majority Tells Quinnipiac University Poll; Only 10% Say They've Used Marijuana Since Legalization
PDF format

Legalization of marijuana for recreational use is bad for the state's image, Colorado voters say 51 - 38 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

There are wide differences among parties and among age groups, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Legalization is bad for the state's image, Republicans say 73 - 18 percent and independent voters say 56 - 36 percent. It's good for the state's image, Democrats say 57 - 30 percent.

Voters 18 to 29 years old say 57 - 41 percent it's good for the state's image while voters over 65 years old say 67 - 21 percent it's bad for the state's image.

Only 10 percent of Colorado voters say they've tried marijuana since it became legal January 1, but 51 percent of voters say they've tried marijuana at some point. Among voters over 65 years old, 26 percent say they've tried marijuana at some point, rising to 57 to 59 percent among voters in younger age groups.

Voters oppose 81 - 14 percent changing the law to allow people to grow more than 12 marijuana plants in their home, but say 73 - 26 percent that it wouldn't bother them if a neighbor grows marijuana at home. Even voters over 65 say 56 - 41 percent it wouldn't bother them.

"Slightly more than half of Coloradans say they've smoked marijuana at some time in their life, but only 10 percent admit to taking a legal toke since January 1," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"And 51 percent of voters, the slimmest of majorities, think legalization is bad for the state's wholesome image."

Only 17 percent of Colorado voters say it is "very likely" or "somewhat likely" they would try marijuana brownies if someone brought them to a gathering, while 12 percent say it is "somewhat unlikely" and 70 percent say it is "very unlikely" they would try the brownies.

And 64 percent of voters say they would be "very uncomfortable" riding in a car with a driver who has smoked or consumed moderate amounts of marijuana, while 17 percent would be "somewhat uncomfortable." A total of 17 percent would be "very comfortable" or "somewhat comfortable."

Colorado voters approve 53 - 34 percent of the way Gov. John Hickenlooper is handling marijuana policy. There is almost no gender gap, but voters 18 to 29 years old approve 63 - 26 percent while voters over 65 years old disapprove 50 - 38 percent.

"Coloradans don't mind if their neighbors grow a little grass in their living room, but the prospect of big time grow houses next door is a turnoff," Malloy said.

"And they say thanks but no thanks to marijuana brownies."

From January 29 - February 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,139 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
