December 11, 2013 - Keep Cell Phones Off Planes, American Voters Say 2-1, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; More People Spending Less On Holiday Gifts
PDF format

American voters are opting for quiet in the sky, opposing 59 - 30 percent the use of cell phones on airlines, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Support for the mute button is strong among all groups, even voters 18 to 29 years old, who oppose phones on planes 52 - 39 percent.

Looking at holiday spending, 40 percent of American voters plan to spend less on gifts this year, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds, while 7 percent plan to spend more and 52 percent plan to spend about as much as last year. Among voters with a household income of less than $50,000 per year, 44 percent plan to spend less and 7 percent plan to spend more. In households with income of more than $100,000 per year, 34 percent plan to spend less and 9 percent plan to spend more.

Only 14 percent of American voters plan to give less to charity this year, while 17 percent plan to give more and 67 percent plan to give about as much as last year.

"'Buckle up; hang up and shut up on airplanes,' chatter weary American voters say," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"On another subject, 40 percent of voters say they are feeling the pinch and cutting down on their holiday shopping, but only 14 percent say they are cutting back on charitable giving."

American voters support fracking to extract oil and gas 45 - 36 percent, with large partisan, gender and racial divisions. Support is 65 - 19 percent among Republicans and 45 - 36 percent among independent voters, with Democrats opposed 52 - 26 percent.

Men support fracking 57 - 30 percent, while women are opposed 41 - 33 percent. White voters support it 48 - 35 percent, with black voters opposed 40 - 27 percent and Hispanic voters opposed 43 - 35 percent.

A total of 45 percent of voters say fracking is "very safe" or "somewhat safe," while 34 percent say it is "not very safe" or "not at all safe."

2016 Presidential Race

New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are the lead reindeer pulling the 2016 presidential sleigh, with 42 percent for Gov. Christie and 41 percent for Secretary Clinton. The Democrat tops other possible Republican contenders:
  • 48 - 41 percent over U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky;
  • 50 - 37 percent over U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas;
  • 48 - 39 percent over former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush;
Christie continues to have the brightest nose of any of the presidential reindeer, a 47 - 23 percent favorability rating among American voters, followed by Clinton with 53 - 42 percent, a smaller net favorability, and U.S. Rep Paul Ryan of Wisconsin with a 38 - 31 percent favorability.

Among the other contenders, the favorability is divided, or negative or the percentage of voters who don't know enough about the candidates to have an opinion exceeds 50 percent.

Christie leads a Republican primary with 17 percent, followed by Paul at 14 percent, Cruz at 13 percent, Bush at 11 percent, with no one else over 9 percent.

Clinton sweeps the Democratic field with 66 percent, with no one else over 8 percent.

"It's still two years before they're shivering in the snow in Iowa and New Hampshire, but today, New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie and Secretary Hillary Clinton are the hottest prospects for 2016," Malloy said.

From December 3 - 9, Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,692 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 1.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 1,182 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points and 1,095 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
