QUWAC members present at conference
June 19, 2014 - On May 29, Lauren Sardi, assistant professor of sociology, and Stacy Missari, assistant professor of sociology and internship coordinator, presented on the experiences and difficulties in assessing diversity learning outcomes in sociology at the Center for Academic Excellence conference at Fairfield University. Sardi and Missari are part of the Quinnipiac's Writing Across the Curriculum (QUWAC).
The presentation described how QUWAC-developed strategies, such as writing-to-learn assignments, are useful in measuring student learning outcomes surrounding diversity awareness at the introductory level.
While simple analysis of results demonstrate a surface-level gain in disciplinary knowledge of diversity within a sociological context, Sardi and Missari noted the difficulties in evaluating such assessment revolve around a number of issues, the most obvious one being how to assess knowledge learned only from the course material and not from any type of pre-exposure to sociological concepts. Thus, future research will involve additional data gathering and a restructured coding scheme.
