The University is developing a new 104-acre campus in North Haven, Conn., to accommodate its growing number of graduate programs, as well as the upper division professional programs in the School of Health Sciences. Just a short drive from the Mount Carmel Campus in Hamden, the North Haven Campus will eventually house most of the University's graduate programs and Quinnipiac University Online. Quinnipiac's plans to develop the campus were among the reasons Money magazine gave when it named North Haven as one of the 100 best places to live in the United States.
About the Campus
The University purchased the 104-acre Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield campus from Wellpoint, Inc., in September 2007. The University renovated an existing 180,000-square-foot building on the campus, which opened in Fall 2009. Under the purchase agreement, the University currently leases three other buildings on the site to Anthem, but will gain occupancy of these buildings over the next several years, at which time they will be renovated for University use.
The North Haven graduate and health sciences center houses the following School of Health Sciences programs:
All graduate classes in these programs are held in North Haven. Most of the junior and senior year classes in the undergraduate portion of the programs are also held in the North Haven facility. Students in these majors will still take their freshman and sophomore year classes on the Mount Carmel Campus.
The center provides significantly more space and $3.5 million in new equipment, allowing these highly-ranked programs to grow and flourish. Its modern facilities may encourage collaborative research and projects between faculty and students, and also across disciplines. The School of Business and the School of Education also hold graduate-level classes in this building.
About the North Haven Graduate and Health Sciences Center
The center includes 12 classrooms; 16 seminar rooms and team-study rooms; 24 teaching labs; a model apartment to teach students how to provide care in residential settings; a SimMan suite of life-size patient simulators; and a pediatric and neonatal lab. It also boasts cutting-edge equipment, including magnetic resonance simulators and 3-D workstations. Faculty and administrative offices for the School of Health Sciences are also located here.
The center has a full-service cafeteria with similar offerings as CaféQ on the Mount Carmel Campus, including hot entrée choices, sandwiches, salads and soups. Students use their Q-Cards in the cafeteria, which is operated by Chartwells. The cafeteria includes dining tables and a lounge area overlooking a pond.
For students' convenience, the registrar, bursar and the bookstore also have a presence in the center. It is equipped with the wireless campus network. The center features a Health Sciences Library, which is part of the Arnold Bernhard Library. In addition to complete access to the Bernhard Library collection, the Health Sciences collection contains 75 core print journals and more than 700 books selected to support the programs at North Haven.
The North Haven Campus features several basketball courts for students' use. There are also walking/fitness trails on the property. The courts and walking trails are shared with Anthem Blue Cross-Blue Shield employees.
Green Initiatives
The renovation of the center was conducted with many "green" initiatives in mind. Environmentally-friendly features include:
The North Haven Campus strives to be an environmental steward with its recycling programs, its use of environmentally friendly cleaning supplies as well as reduction in energy use across the campus.
Security
As with our two other campuses, safety and security officers have a significant presence on the North Haven campus. The staff responds to all emergencies and requests for assistance. The department investigates complaints and submits follow-up written reports, and maintains working relationships with area law enforcement and emergency service agencies on matters related to campus safety and security.
The department also issues all campus parking permits. There are more than 600 parking spaces available for use by Quinnipiac students, faculty and staff on the North Haven Campus.
Security can be reached at 203-582-6200 or by e-mail at security@quinnipiac.edu.
