On the 31st day of Oct. 1687, Sir Edmund Andross assumed the Government, and retained it till the 9th day of May 1689, when Gov. Treat with the former officers, at the urgent request of the people resumed the Government of the Colony.

* Previous to this time, (1647,) the Governors had no salary by law allowed them,
but served the people for the public good. But at this time, the General Court
taking the affair into consideration, granted the Governour 30 pounds annually.
A like grant was also made to the Deputy Govern-or for his services the preceding year.
These were the first salaries granted to any Civil Officers in the service of the Colony.
The following is a copy of the Act— March 9th, 1647.
"Whereas by reason of many waighty occations, expen-ces and chardges,
are yearly expended by the Governour, it is therefore ordered, that there
shall be yearly allowed to that place, £30, and £30, to the Deputy
Governour for the year past."
