Dr. Kellie Watkins-Colwell

As a family medicine practitioner for 15 years, Dr. Kellie Watkins-Colwell, MD, has been able to create effective and long-lasting bonds with her patients.

"Patients who were children when I started in the practice are now getting married and having children, and they bring their children to the practice," says Watkins-Colwell, a clinical faculty member in the School of Medicine. "I chose to go into family medicine in particular for the patient interaction and the long-term relationships. It's really satisfying to get to know them and establish those kinds of connections."

Watkins-Colwell has taught physician assistant students at the University of New England for 10 years and she is eager to begin instructing Quinnipiac medical students. "I like the teaching process. It's important to be able to explain why we do what we do. It's rewarding to see students go from being nervous and insecure to being confident practitioners when they leave."

Watkins-Colwell earned her medical degree at Wright State University in Ohio and completed her medical internship and residency at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Stamford, Conn. She has worked as a family medicine practitioner for 15 years at PriMed in Fairfield, Conn.

By teaching, Watkins-Colwell hopes to inspire students to consider family medicine. "Family medicine is not a well-recognized specialty in this area. I am looking forward to working with medical students to be able to show them the joys of family medicine."
