Students to travel to Australia to watch FIFA Women’s World Cup Soccer matches

Two Quinnipiac professors are leading a group of 16 students, who studied global women’s sports last semester, to Sydney, Australia, where they will attend four FIFA Women’s World Cup Soccer matches later this month.

In addition to watching Women’s World Cup soccer, the students, who will be in Sydney from July 24-August 3, will study the political and cultural issues in the countries hosting matches. They also will meet with a local member of Parliament as well as international journalists who will be covering the Women’s World Cup.

The two faculty members leading the trip, Hillary Haldane, professor of anthropology, and Molly Yanity, professor and chair of journalism, have each published research on the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Haldane is a co-author of the chapter, “Marketing Māori: The Marketing and Branding of Indigeneity in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023,” which appears in the new book, "The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Politics, Representation and Management.” Yanity is the editor of "2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Media, Fandom, and Soccer’s Biggest Stage."
