ABCs of Going Greek
Before you join, learn the basics of Greek terminology.
Active - An initiated member of a fraternity or sorority.
Alumna/Alumnus - A member of a sorority or fraternity who is not affiliated with a collegiate chapter.
Bid - A formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority.
Bid Matching - A system of matching a potential new member's preference with a sorority.
Brother - A term used within a men's fraternity when referring to other members.
Chapter - The local group of a national fraternity or sorority.
Dues - Fees for fraternity or sorority membership.
Fraternity - A national organization for men based upon mutual interest, friendship, and assistance.
Greeks - Students affiliated with Greek-letter fraternities and sororities.
Independent - A person who is not a member of a Greek-letter organization.
Initiation - The ceremony in which a new member becomes a fully active member.
Interfraternity Council (IFC) - Governing body for men's fraternities at QU.
Legacy - A potential member who has a relative that is a member of a fraternity or sorority.
New Member - Title given to a potential member from the time he/she accepts a bid until the time he/she is actually initiated.
New Member Education - A period of time spent learning about fraternity and sorority life prior to initiation.
Open Bidding - A period of time when there is informal, continuous open bidding (COB). Bids may be extended and accepted without preferential or involved procedures.
Panhellenic Council (QPC) - Governing body for women's sororities at QU.
Philanthropy - Community service and fundraising efforts to promote human welfare. Each fraternity or sorority undertakes its own philanthropies.
Quota - The number of new members any sorority may pledge during the specified formal recruitment period.
Recruitment - A process of mutual selection whereby each woman (potential member) and each sorority is able to make an educated decision by getting to know one another.
Recruitment Counselor - Sorority members who serve as counselors and resources to potential members during women's formal recruitment.
Ritual - The traditional, sacred ceremonies of a chapter, which are usually secret.
Sister - A term used within a women's fraternity when referring to other initiated members.
Sorority - A group of women banded together for social and educational purposes.
