The Learning Center at Quinnipiac University is a valuable faculty resource. We provide faculty support and resources that help students reach their course objectives.
High Standards, Current Trends
We strive to keep our resources to a standard that meets Quinnipiac’s expectation of excellence. We are a charter member of Quinnipiac University’s Writing Across the Curriculum initiative and the Excellence in Education Seminar Series. We also work closely with the Christine Ross, director of the Freshman Writing Program, as well as other faculty members, departments and deans so that we stay current with new indicatives and expectations. We also rely on the expertise of teaching faculty members as guest presenters in our staff training cycles and workshops.
Workshops
Each semester, the Learning Center professional staff collaborates with faculty members to develop in-class workshops. This collaboration offers students a tremendous opportunity to learn and practice specific writing skills and strategies in the context of their course material. Past topics have included strategies for research papers, avoiding plagiarism, citation expectations of the discipline and using writing to promote critical thinking.
Trend Reports
Each semester, the Learning Center collects and archives the "professor reports" written by our peer tutors. These professor reports offer insight that is often of use to faculty members. Typically, professor reports are sent electronically to faculty members, describing the individual tutorial, student by student. Another benefit, however, is our ability to organize and report the information by “professor.” This perspective offers faculty members a chance to identify trends in their students’ interaction with the Learning Center.
Referrals
When necessary, faculty members may refer students to the Learning Center for more development. Using our interactive writing referral page, faculty members can direct a student to one of our writing tutors with a list of specific needs to be reviewed and discussed.
Faculty members can also refer students for nonwriting issues using our early-warning program referral page. Upon referral, the director will contact the student and the student’s academic adviser to arrange a meeting.
