Case Review (Preliminary Inquiry)
1. When a Case Review is necessary, the Director of Academic Integrity will act expeditiously to select, from the Academic Integrity Board, a Case Advisory Team consisting of one (1) student and one (1) faculty, and will provide written notification to the student(s), staff, and faculty member(s) involved indicating that a preliminary inquiry has begun. Any member of the Academic Integrity Board who has a conflict of interest in the case should make that conflict known to the Director of Academic Integrity
2. Acting with all reasonable dispatch, the Case Advisory Team will interview the student(s), the faculty member(s), and any witnesses involved in the case. This team also will collect and review all evidence relevant to the case.
3. Any cases which involve more than one student, will all be heard prior to any voting by the board on individual cases.
4. Upon completing the investigation, the Case Advisory Team will meet as soon as reasonably possible to determine whether sufficient evidence of a violation exists to send the case forward for a hearing.
a. If insufficient evidence of the alleged violation(s) is determined, the report and charges will be dismissed. Under these circumstances, no record of the report or the outcome will be retained in the student's file. The Director of Academic Integrity must inform the student(s) and other involved parties of this decision.
b. If sufficient evidence of a violation is determined, the Case Advisory Team may suggest a resolution to the parties involved, or it may forward the case directly to the Academic Integrity Board.
c. If a resolution is recommended and the parties agree with the suggested resolution, they should fill out a Joint Resolution Form. The joint resolution is subject to the approval of the Director of Academic Integrity. If the Director of Academic Integrity does not approve the joint resolution, the parties have the options of resubmitting the joint resolution form with a different resolution or of proceeding to a hearing. If the parties do not agree with the resolution suggested, the case will be forwarded to the Academic Integrity Board for a formal hearing.
d. If the Case Advisory Team decides not to suggest a resolution, the case will be forwarded to the Academic Integrity Board for a formal hearing.
e. The Case Advisory Team will notify the Director of Academic Integrity in writing of the decision. It will make the materials it used in its review available to the Academic Integrity Board.
f. The Director of Academic Integrity must inform the student(s), faculty and staff involved of the decision to hold a hearing as soon as reasonably possible.
