March 27, 2008 - Independent Voters Give Obama Huge Connecticut Lead, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Clinton By A Nose Over McCain

Word format With strong support from young and independent voters, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama leads Arizona Sen. John McCain 52 - 35 percent in Connecticut, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. These same voters do not give New York Sen. Hillary Clinton as much support in her 45 - 42 percent lead over Sen. McCain.
In the Obama-McCain matchup, independent voters support the Democrat 45 - 38 percent, while voters under 45 years old back him 63 - 30 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh- pe-ack) University poll finds. White voters back Obama 48 - 39 percent while black voters back him 91 - 5 percent.
When Clinton faces McCain, independent voters go to the Republican 48 - 36 percent, while young voters back her 50 - 39 percent. Men back McCain 52 - 37 percent, while women back Clinton 53 - 33 percent.
Connecticut voters split 46 - 47 percent in their favorable/unfavorable opinion of Clinton. Obama gets a 59 - 24 percent favorability. McCain gets a 52 - 31 percent score.
"Sen. Barack Obama has argued that he is more electable than Sen. Hillary Clinton because of his appeal to independent voters. And in Connecticut that is what we are finding. Independent voters, especially independent men, make the difference in Connecticut," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.
"Obama wins a huge 73 percent of voters under 35, but will they show up on Election Day? Historically, they haven't turned out."
The economy is the single most important issue in their presidential vote, 47 percent of Connecticut voters say, followed by 25 percent who list the war in Iraq and 11 percent who list health care. Voters split on the most important quality they want in a candidate, with 29 percent looking for a strong leader and 28 percent looking for someone trustworthy.
The U.S. economy is in a recession, voters say 74 - 21 percent. If Obama is elected, the economy will get better, voters say 40 - 16 percent, while 35 percent say it won't change. If Clinton is elected, voters say 36 - 20 percent the economy will get better, with 36 percent saying it won't change. If McCain wins, voters say 25 - 20 percent the economy will get worse, while 47 percent say it won't change.
Obama would be a good president, voters say 56 - 28 percent, as 31 percent of his backers cite fresh ideas and 19 percent cite his intelligence. The main reason he would not be a good president, 69 percent of detractors say, is that he is not knowledgeable or experienced.
Clinton would be a good president, voters say 49 - 43 percent, with 48 percent of backers citing experience and 27 percent who say she is knowledgeable or intelligent. Her weakest points are President Bill Clinton and past controversies, 26 percent of detractors say, while 25 percent say she is dishonest.
McCain would be a good president, voters say 51 - 35 percent, as 48 percent cite his experience and 22 percent point to his military background. His stand on the war in Iraq is his weakest point, 53 percent say, while 29 percent cite his loyalty to the Republican Party and President George W. Bush.
Bush, Dodd Approval
Connecticut voters disapprove 76 - 20 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, his lowest approval in any Quinnipiac University poll in any state. U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd's 51 - 28 percent approval also is his lowest ever.
"Sen. Dodd's approval declined steadily as he ran for President. Perhaps his numbers will come back up again, now that he is home from the campaign trail. We will keep an eye on Dodd. He is up for reelection in 2010 and no incumbent wants to start a reelection campaign with numbers that low," Dr. Schwartz said.
From March 19 - 24, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,697 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points.
