June 7, 2007 - Thompson Surges Among Florida Republicans, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Giuliani Still Leads All Democrats

Word format Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, undeclared and still largely unknown in the 2008 presidential race, has moved into second place among Florida Republicans, passing Arizona Sen. John McCain, and trailing New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, the Democratic leader, by 3 percentage points, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani leads among Republican primary voters, with 31 percent, down from 38 percent on April 26. Thompson gets 14 percent, up from 5 percent April 26, while McCain gets 10 percent, down from 15 percent. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney gets 8 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gets 7 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.
Among Democrats, Clinton gets 34 percent, with 16 percent for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, 13 percent for former Vice President Al Gore and 11 percent for 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards.
Giuliani tops Clinton 47 - 42 percent. In other head-to-head matchups:
Clinton tops Thompson 43 - 40 percent and beats McCain 45 - 42 percent; Giuliani beats Obama 44 - 40 percent and tops Gore 47 - 41 percent; McCain gets 41 percent to Obama's 40 percent; Gore gets 43 percent to McCain's 42 percent; Obama beats Thompson 41 - 36 percent and Gore tops Thompson 47 - 37 percent.
"Mayor Giuliani is ahead, but his support is slipping and his new major challenger is not even in the race. Thompson, who deserves an Emmy for his performance as the dark horse, seems to be picking up many of those who are leaving Giuliani and McCain, whose support seems to be collapsing," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
"Sen. Clinton may face some obstacles in some of the early primary states, but in Florida - which offers a big delegate prize - she has little to worry about at this point," said Brown.
"Despite losing matchups to the three Democrats, Thompson's showing may turn heads, given that 58 percent of voters say they have not yet heard enough about him to have an opinion. Yet, among those who do, his 27 percent favorable/12 percent unfavorable ratio, 41 - 3 among Republicans and 30 - 12 among independents, is tops among all the candidates.
"Thompson seems to have captured at least part of the public's imagination. Now his challenge is to introduce himself to the majority of Americans who do not recognize him, haven't yet put together his name with the actor who plays Arthur Branch on Law and Order, or don't known about his eight years in the U.S. Senate," said Brown.
Florida voters give Giuliani a 52 - 27 percent favorability. Scores for other candidates are:
44 - 45 percent for Clinton; 49 - 40 percent for Gore; 41 - 30 percent for McCain; 42 - 26 percent for Obama; 40 - 29 percent for Edwards; 58 percent haven't heard enough about Thompson to form an opinion; 58 percent haven't heard enough about Romney.
Bush Approval
Florida voters disapprove 63 - 32 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, his lowest score ever in the state. They disapprove 68 - 27 percent of his handling of the war in Iraq.
Republican Sen. Mel Martinez' 37 - 34 percent approval rating also is his lowest score ever.
From May 24 - June 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,174 Florida voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. The survey includes 467 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points, and 472 Democrats, with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points.
