July 23, 2007 - Bloomberg Boosts Democrats' Fortunes In Florida, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; McCain Fades In Republican Primary Race

Word format If New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg runs for President as an independent candidate, it helps Democrats in Florida, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. In a two- way race, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani edges New York Sen. Hillary Clinton 46 - 44 percent. With Bloomberg in the mix, taking 9 percent, Clinton inches past Giuliani 41 - 39 percent, giving the Democrat her best shot so far at Florida's crucial 27 electoral votes.
In a matchup of second place contenders, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama tops former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson 42 - 39 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. In a three-way race, Obama doubles his lead over Thompson to 38 - 32 percent, with 14 percent for Bloomberg.
"The conventional wisdom may be that Mayor Bloomberg's generally liberal approach to many issues would mean he would take more votes from Democrats and help the Republicans in a three-way race. At this point, that just isn't so," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
"Mayor Bloomberg can clearly be a spoiler in Florida, but he would have a long way to go to have a serious chance of winning the state," said Brown. "Only slightly more people view him favorably than unfavorably and 57 percent don't know enough about him to venture an opinion."
In other general election match-ups, Clinton defeats Thompson 48 - 39 percent and tops Arizona Sen. John McCain 46 - 40 percent. Obama defeats McCain 42 - 38 percent and loses to Giuliani 47 - 39 percent. McCain also loses 45 - 41 percent to former Vice President Al Gore, who defeats Thompson 47 - 39 percent and loses to Giuliani 48 - 42 percent.
In the Democratic primary race, Clinton gets 36 percent, compared to 14 percent each for Obama and former Vice President Al Gore, while former Sen. John Edwards gets 9 percent.
In a Republican primary, Giuliani would get 30 percent compared to 18 percent for Thompson, 10 percent for McCain and 9 percent for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
"Florida is as good an example as there is regarding the demise of Sen. McCain's fortunes," said Brown. "His share of the Republican vote has dropped from 23 percent in February to 10 percent today. And while he used to defeat Democrats in mythical match-ups he now loses all of them."
Florida voters give Giuliani a 56 - 27 percent favorability. Scores for other candidates are:
49 - 44 percent for Clinton; 52 - 39 percent for Gore; 40 - 34 percent for McCain; 45 - 25 percent for Obama; 40 - 32 percent for Edwards; 33 - 15 percent for Thompson, with 49 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion; 56 percent haven't heard enough about Romney.
Bush Approval
Florida voters disapprove 63 - 33 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, matching his lowest score ever in the state.
From July 12 - 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,106 Florida voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. The survey includes 433 Republicans and 438 Democrats, each with a margin of error of +/- 4.7 percentage points.
