May 24, 2006 - Democrat Davis By A Nose In Florida Governor's Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; But Early Choice Could Be Anti-Republican Vote

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Davis has a razor-thin edge over two Republican contenders in the Florida Governor's race, squeaking by State Attorney General Charlie Crist 40 - 37 percent, with 19 percent undecided, and inching ahead of State Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher 40 - 37 percent, with 20 percent undecided, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
In a Democratic primary, Davis leads State Sen. Rod Smith 38 - 17 percent with 41 percent undecided, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Among Republicans, Crist tops Gallagher 43 - 26 percent, with 28 percent undecided.
In a general election matchup, Crist edges Smith 39 - 37 percent, while Gallagher is ahead of Smith 39 - 35 percent.
Florida voters give Crist a 34 -9 percent favorability rating, with 14 percent mixed and 43 percent who don't know enough to form an opinion. Gallagher gets a 28 - 9 percent favorability, with 16 percent mixed and 46 percent who don't know enough to form an opinion. For Davis and Smith, at least 78 percent don't know enough to form an opinion.
"The race for Governor remains wide open. One in five Florida voters are undecided, including almost one in three independents - the group that will decide the election," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
"The candidates, especially the Democrats, are not well known, so it's reasonable to conclude that President Bush's slide in the polls has hurt GOP candidates in Florida," Brown added.
"Although little has changed in the general election matchups, the leading candidates for the Republican and Democratic gubernatorial nominations each have widened their leads."
President Bush's Approval
Florida voters disapprove 60 - 36 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, little changed from a 60 - 35 percent disapproval April 20.
Going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do, voters say 58 - 37 percent. The U.S. should remove all troops from Iraq, 31 percent of Florida voters say, with 26 percent who want to decrease the number of troops; 21 percent who want to keep troop levels the same and 14 percent who say increase the number of troops.
Gov. Jeb Bush gets a 55 - 35 percent approval rating.
Among Republican voters, 46 percent would like to see former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani nominated to run for President in 2008, followed by 25 percent who back Arizona Sen. John McCain, with no other GOP contender breaking 7 percent.
New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is the choice of 44 percent of Florida Democrats, followed by former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards with 17 percent, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry at 10 percent and Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden at 8 percent.
On head-to-head matchups, Giuliani leads Clinton 49 - 42 percent, while McCain tops the Democrat 48 - 42 percent.
From May 15 - 22, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,086 Florida registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. The survey includes 455 Democratic voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.6 percentage points and 424 Republican voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.8 percentage points.
