February 24, 2009 - Bulletproof Bloomberg Has High Approval, Big Lead, Quinnipiac University New York City Poll Finds; More Voters Say He Should Run As Independent

Word format

Despite bad economic news and a grim outlook for the city budget, New York City voters still approve 65 - 29 percent of the job Mayor Michael Bloomberg is doing and give him double-digit leads over little-known likely Democratic challengers, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This is Mayor Bloomberg's lowest approval rating since he began his second term and is down from a 69 - 25 percent approval rating in a January 27 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

If the 2009 mayoral election were held today:
  • Bloomberg tops New York City Comptroller William Thompson 50 - 33 percent, virtually unchanged since January 27;
  • Bloomberg beats U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner 48 - 36 percent, compared to 50 - 35 percent last month.
Weiner tops Thompson in a Democratic primary 32 - 22 percent, with 42 percent undecided.

The economy is the single most important issue in their vote for Mayor, 53 percent of New York City voters say, as 19 percent list education and 12 percent list taxes.

Voters approve 58 - 35 percent of the way Bloomberg is handling the economy.

"The two guys from Brooklyn who want Mayor Bloomberg's job trail him when New Yorkers talk about what they want in a mayor. It's not that U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner and City Comptroller William Thompson get negative marks on leadership, honesty or compassion - it's just that Bloomberg's numbers are high and a lot of New Yorkers answer 'don't know' about the two challengers," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"His business background gives Mayor Mike oodles of money, and good marks on dealing with the economy, which New Yorkers say will be the big issue in the election. They think the economy will improve - or at least hold steady - with Bloomberg in City Hall," Carroll said.

By a 62 - 32 percent margin, New York City voters have a favorable opinion of Bloomberg. Weiner gets a 32 - 12 percent favorability, but 55 percent don't know enough about him to form an opinion. Thompson gets a 22 - 5 percent favorability, but 71 percent don't know enough about him.

Bloomberg should run for reelection as an "independent," 41 percent of voters say, while 19 percent say he should run as a Democrat and 11 percent say he should run as a Republican. Bloomberg's views on issues are closer to the Democratic Party, 41 percent of voters say, while 36 percent say he's more a Republican.

Voters reject 55 - 36 percent a proposal to eliminate party labels for candidates running for Mayor and other city offices. Even independent voters split 47 - 46 percent on the idea.

Looking at personal qualities, New York City voters say:
  • 86 - 12 percent that Bloomberg has strong leadership;
  • 68 - 25 percent that Bloomberg is honest and trustworthy;
  • 55 - 40 percent that Bloomberg cares about their needs and problems;
  • 37 - 20 percent, with 43 percent undecided, that Weiner has strong leadership;
  • 39 - 13 percent, with 47 percent undecided, that Weiner is honest and trustworthy;
  • 43 - 14 percent, with 43 percent undecided, that he cares about their needs and problems;
  • 31 - 15 percent, with 54 percent undecided, that Thompson has strong leadership;
  • 37 - 8 percent, with 55 percent undecided, that Thompson is honest and trustworthy;
  • 36 - 10 percent, with 53 percent undecided, that he cares about their needs and problems.
"It's not that New Yorkers don't like Weiner or Thompson. They just don't know much about them," Carroll said. "That's probably why the big winner in a Democratic primary - almost a majority - is 'don't know.' Among those who do know, Weiner is ahead by a bit."

From February 17 - 22, Quinnipiac University surveyed 984 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points. The survey includes 646 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.9 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research.
