May 31, 2007 - Gore Moving Up In Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Leads Obama Among Dems, Runs Best Against Giuliani

Word format Former Vice President Al Gore, who has not declared his candidacy for the 2008 presidential nomination, runs better in Pennsylvania than any Democrat against the Republican front runner, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani: Gore has 45 percent to Giuliani's 44 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
Giuliani leads New York Sen. Hillary Clinton 47 - 43 percent and tops Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 45 - 40 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. In other possible presidential matchups in Pennsylvania:
Clinton edges Arizona Sen. John McCain 45 - 43 percent; Clinton tops former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson 50 - 36 percent; McCain gets 42 percent to 41 percent for Obama; McCain ties Gore 44 - 44 percent; Obama beats Thompson 47 - 32 percent; Gore beats Thompson 50 - 35 percent.
Sen. Clinton gets 33 percent of Democratic primary voters, with 16 percent for Gore, 13 percent for Obama and 11 percent for Edwards. This compares to a March 29 poll showing 36 percent for Clinton, 17 percent for Obama, 13 percent for Gore, and 9 percent for Edwards. "While it's still Sen. Clinton and Mayor Giuliani at the top of the presidential race, Vice President Gore is getting stronger and Sen. McCain weaker in the latest Pennsylvania poll," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
"Sen. Clinton continues to get about a third of all Democratic voters in a potential primary, but Gore is now in second with 16 percent while Sen. Barack Obama has dropped to third."
In a Republican primary, Giuliani gets 28 percent, with 11 percent for McCain, 10 percent for Thompson, 9 percent for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and 8 percent for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
"On the GOP side, Giuliani's 28 percent is nearly identical to last month, but McCain has dropped six points to 11 percent, with Fred Thompson, who hasn't even announced, on his heels with 10 percent," Richards said.
"Giuliani still would beat Clinton or Obama head to head, but when he's up against Gore, the former Vice President has an insignificant one point lead, but a lead nonetheless. The two were tied a month ago."
Pennsylvania voters give Giuliani a 53 - 28 percent favorability rating. Favorability ratings for other contenders are:
50 - 44 percent for Clinton; 52 - 40 percent for Gore; 44 - 28 percent for McCain; 44 - 19 percent for Obama; 45 - 26 percent for Edwards; 63 percent haven't heard enough about Thompson to form an opinion; For Romney, 62 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion.
President Bush's Approval
Pennsylvania voters disapprove 67 - 29 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, his lowest score ever in the state.
Voters disapprove 70 - 26 percent of the President's handling of the war in Iraq and say 60 - 34 percent that going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do.
From May 22 - 28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,318 Pennsylvania voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. The survey includes 575 Republicans, with a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percentage points, and 585 Democrats, with a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percentage points.
