Bookmark and Share

Quinnipiac has once again been named among the nation's best universities providing a full range of undergraduate and master's level programs in the U.S. News & World Report's 2009 America's Best Colleges issue, the definitive guide for college-bound students.

Quinnipiac ranked first among northern universities with master's degree programs as having made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, campus or facilities, according to the Aug. 26 special issue.

U.S. News also recognized Quinnipiac as being among the best universities providing a full range of undergraduate and master-level programs. Quinnipiac was ranked 13th among the northern universities offering master's degree programs.

The U.S. News ranking system rests on two pillars. It relies on quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, and it is based on its nonpartisan view of what matters in education. U.S. News gathers data from each college on up to 15 indicators of academic excellence. Each factor is assigned a weight that reflects the magazine's judgment about how much a measure matters. Finally, the colleges in each category are ranked against their peers, based on their composite weighted score.

In its methodology, U.S. News considers academic reputation, retention, student-to-faculty ratios, student selectivity and alumni giving rate, among other factors.

Only about 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America (plus two Canadian colleges) were chosen for the book. Robert Franek, Princeton Review's vice president of publishing, said, "We chose schools for this book primarily for their outstanding academics. We evaluated them based on institutional data we collect about the schools, feedback from students attending them and our visits to schools over the years. We also consider the opinions of independent college counselors, students, and parents we hear from year-long. Finally, we work to have a wide representation of colleges in the book by region, size, selectivity and character."
