All theater requires collaboration. But “Walls,” a workshop production written and performed by 18 students, went further. Based on Stephen Crane’s novel, “The Red Badge of Courage”; on-site research in Ireland; and a previous workshop production set during the American Civil War, “Walls” was a process of merging sources and combining efforts in search of a profound and universal theme.
As “Walls” director Crystal Brian said, “Exploring issues of conflict and forgiveness are of profound concern to the students who live in an increasingly polarized and violence-torn world.” Brian is professor of theater and a recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award.

Two other professors, William Stark and Rebecca Abbott, were involved as well. Stark, adjunct professor of theater, designed the sets; Abbott, associate professor of communications, helped incorporate videos and photos of Northern Ireland into the production.
Students—freshmen through seniors, including Anastacia Tucker, pictured at left—came from a range of majors: communications, veterinary technology, gerontology, history, English and biology. Fifteen of the 18 had enrolled in Theater and Community, which is traditionally taught in the spring.
