Hello and welcome.
I work closely with students who choose to disclose a disability. We work together to make sure each student has equal access to the educational opportunities here at Quinnipiac. I also work closely with the director and the assistant director of the Learning Center, as well as many other resources on campus.
Students are guaranteed reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act (504).
Reasonable accommodations are based on recent documentation supplied to me by the student. I then determine the appropriateness of the accommodations requested by reviewing the documentation. Each disability has its own set of criteria for documentation. Therefore, it is important to contact me to find out the particular policy or guidelines to be eligible for accommodations. This may require retesting or periodic updating of the documentation by the appropriate medical person, psychologist or psychiatrist.
Students may disclose at any time. However, it is recommended that a new student begin the process of disclosure as soon after acceptance to Quinnipiac as possible. Early disclosure will achieve two important results:
1. Earlier evaluation of documentation
2. Earlier initiation of dialogue with professors
Students must meet with me to discuss the desired accommodation. I then give a letter to the student detailing any academic accommodations to which the student is entitled. It is then the student's responsibility to self-advocate with the professor to ensure that the accommodation is implemented.
We follow a model of self-advocacy and place the responsibility of accommodation implementation on the student. If for any reason the student is not allowed the accommodation, it is the responsibility of the student with the disability to inform me, so I may follow up with the student and the professor. In order to receive accommodations for each semester, the student is responsible for contacting me that semester whether it is for all the classes or just one class.
