Our Philosophy

We believe each student is an individual, bringing both strengths and weaknesses to any academic challenge.  We also believe that intentional, active learning requires reflection. As a result, all of our programs are developed toward offering students many chances to reflect on not only what they are studying, but also how they are studying it.

Our Philosophy in Action

Successful students realize that acquiring knowledge is not enough, that the real lessons of a university education come in the process of learning. The Learning Center fosters the University’s goal of lifelong learning by focusing on developing students’ skills as independent learners and serves as the first line of academic assistance for all students.

The Learning Center’s focus on developing self-sufficient learners leads to classroom success. Examples include the peer tutors and fellows, students with exemplary grades who take the time to learn about how students perform best, and in turn often find ways to be even better performing students themselves. These lessons become the basis for our interactions with students. Assistance from the Learning Center results not only in a student who knows more, but also a student who knows better how to learn.
