Quinnipiac University along with the Chickering Group has developed a student health insurance plan especially for our students. The plan, which is underwritten by Aetna Life Insurance Company, provides coverage for illnesses and injuries that occur on and off campus and includes special cost-saving features to keep the coverage as affordable as possible. All full-time undergraduate students are eligible.
This is a hard waiver policy. A hard waiver program means that you MUST maintain major medical insurance coverage. Students may waive health insurance coverage if the student presents evidence of other health insurance coverage under a plan that provides benefits equal to or greater than the Quinnipiac University Student Health Insurance Plan. Students must document evidence of coverage and make an on-line waiver decision by the waiver deadline. The waiver deadline is August 29, 2008.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Quinnipiac Health Insurance Plan
What does the plan cover?
The plan covers accident and sickness expenses including hospital room and board, emergency care, lab and x-rays, inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures, physician office visits, prescription coverage, and a routine physical exam.
When does coverage begin and end?
Your coverage will begin on August 15, 2008 and end on August 14, 2009.
How much does this plan cost?
This plan costs $1050 for the year.
Can I go to any doctor or hospital?
You can go to any doctor or hospital, but there are doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers that are part of the Aetna Network, a preferred provider organization. When you receive treatment from a provider in the Aetna Network, the plan provides coverage, and your out-of-pocket costs will be less.
How can I find out about providers who participate in the preferred provider network?
The doctors and other health care providers who belong to Aetna’s network are called preferred providers. They include general practitioners and internists, as well as specialists, hospitals, and other health care facilities. Because Aetna’s network extends across the country, you’ll find preferred providers locally as well as nationally. To find a preferred provider, you can use Aetna’s on-line DocFind service at www.aetna.com/docfind. When you visit DocFind, enter your ZIP code and select “Open Choice PPO Plan” as the health plan type. You can use DocFind to find out whether a specific doctor belongs to Aetna’s network or to find preferred providers practicing in your area.
Do I have to get a referral before going to the doctor or hospital?
No referral is necessary.
Are prescription drugs covered?
Prescription drugs are covered at 100 percent following either a $15 copay (for a generic drug) or $30 copay (for a brand name drug) up to a maximum of $500 per policy year.
Does the Student Health Insurance Plan cover me if I travel abroad?
Yes, the Student Health Insurance Plan provides worldwide coverage, whether you are studying abroad or travelling abroad. The plan provides the same benefits as if you were on campus. In addition, through participation in the student insurance plan, each student and his or her enrolled dependents are eligible for travel assistance services. The services are provided through Assist America Inc. and include language interpretation assistance, evacuation to the nearest facility to receive medical treatment, hospital admission guarantee, and repatriation of remains services.
When travelling you should make sure you have our student insurance ID card. When travelling internationally, you may be asked to pay first for your services and then seek reimbursement.
You don’t need a specific claim form to be reimbursed, but you will need to have the itemized bill(s) translated into English (if needed) and sent with a letter to the claims administrator explaining that you need reimbursement.
If you have any questions, you can call Chickering Insurance at 877- 480-4168 or Assist America Inc. at 800-872-1414

Will I get an ID card?
ID cards will be issued as soon as possible. If you need medical attention before the ID card is received, benefits will be payable according to the Policy. You do not need an ID card to be eligible to receive benefits. Once you have received your ID card, present it to the provider to facilitate prompt payment of your claims.
If you lose your ID card, you can order a replacement card as well as print a temporary card with Aetna Navigator. To register for Navigator, call 800-225-3375.
What if I leave the University; can I get a refund?
To qualify for a refund, a student must withdraw from the University prior to the last day of open enrollment, as policies cannot be cancelled through the provider after that date.
Can I cover my annual health insurance premium through a student or parent loan? Families who have been approved for a PLUS or alternative loan can include the insurance premium of $1050 in their loan. Families should contact their lender to request an additional $1050 to cover this cost and also contact the Office of Financial Aid at finaid@quinnipiac.edu to notify us of this request.
