Forty-eight students in the Physician Assistant Student Society organized a road race and fundraiser on Saturday, April 12, to support childhood literacy.
The event included the tenth annual "Run for Your Life" 5K Road Race, eighth annual Cow Chip Bingo and second annual Kids' Fun Run. Students collected $10,000, which was donated to The Children's Shelter in San Antonio, Texas. The students were tasked with raising money to benefit the American Academy of Physician Assistants Host City Prevention Campaign. They will be attending an AAPA conference in May in San Antonio, and took part in the program to raise money for this year's cause: promoting childhood literacy.
The mission of The Children's Shelter is to "strengthen our community by providing safety, well-being and lasting families for children" through programs such as emergency shelters, foster care, adoption, residential treatment care, child abuse prevention and teen pregnancy programs.
More than 150 runners took part in the 5K road race. Following the race, three cows were brought out to the bingo board on Alumni Field, which included 1,000 squares, each measuring 5 feet by 5 feet. Students sold tickets for $10 per bingo square to family members, friends and the general public. First prize was $1,500; second prize was $1,000; and third prize was $500.
