Orientation 2008 FAQ

What is Orientation?
The Orientation Program is a two-day, one-night experience designed to help your son or daughter make a successful transition to Quinnipiac and college life. During Orientation, students have the opportunity to meet with academic deans who will explain Quinnipiac's academic requirements. In addition, students take placement tests, meet with faculty advisers to discuss possible courses for the first semester and learn about the variety of campus resources through staff and upperclass students. We have social activities to help students start the process of making new friends with their classmates, the Class of 2012. It is important to note that once registered, students are expected to participate in the entire experience and to remain on campus at all times.

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Live in the residence halls
  • Meet Orientation Leaders
  • Get to know faculty & staff
  • Explore the campus
  • Meet the Class of 2012
  • Attend social events
  • Take placement tests

When is Orientation?
The Orientation dates for 2008 are:

  • May 30 & 31
  • June 6 & 7
  • June 13 & 14

The Orientation program is a two-day, one-night experience (Friday morning - 9 a.m. through Saturday afternoon - 5 p.m.). Students only need to attend one weekend; however, students must be present and participate in all activities. Late arrivals and early dismissals are not allowed due to the group experience.

**It is preferable to attend one of the above dates, however, if a student has conflicts all three weekends and cannot attend, we offer an August session which takes place on Thursday, August 21, and Friday, August 22. Students will arrive on campus on Wednesday, August 20, and move into their residence hall rooms where they will remain for the rest of the academic year. Students begin Orientation activities on Thursday morning and by Friday afternoon they will have completed the process and will be prepared to begin classes the following Monday.

When should we plan to arrive on campus for a session?
If you are traveling from a distance of more than 3 ½ + hours away, you may call Sue Ticotsky at 203-582-8753 to request an arrival date of the Thursday evening prior to your Orientation weekend. Unfortunately, we can only offer overnight accommodations to students and will not be able to accommodate parents. The deadline for all early arrival requests is Wednesday, May 21.

Students may drive themselves to Orientation. Please note that cars will be parked in a lot, and that lot will be locked for the duration of the program. Once students are on campus, they are not allowed to leave until Saturday evening at 5 p.m.

When will we be notified about Orientation and how do we register?
In late April/early May, all students who have paid deposits will be sent, via the e-mail address they gave the admissions office, an invitation to register for Orientation. This is an online process only; therefore, phone registrations cannot be accepted. Students are not only registering for an Orientation session, they are also creating their Quinnipiac accounts and will need to take the math placement test online.

Will there be placement exams during Orientation?
Students will need to complete a math placement exam online two weeks prior to the Orientation session they are registering for. The English and Foreign Language placement exams will be given on campus during Orientation.

Will registration for Fall classes take place at orientation?
Students do not register for classes during Orientation; however, they will be meeting with their academic deans and advisers during the Orientation program. In mid July, the Registrar's office will be sending home detailed information on how to register for classes through Web Advisor. It does not matter which Orientation program the student attended, as everyone has equal footage during the registration process.

What should students bring to campus?
All meals will be provided for the students during Orientation. We do ask that they bring bedding (extra-long or regular sheets or a sleeping bag to put on top of the bed and a blanket), a little spending money (sodas, pizza at night, etc.), casual, comfortable clothing, all toiletries, comfortable shoes or sneakers, and an alarm clock (the day starts early!) Some students also bring small fans for the residence hall rooms.
