
David Ives, executive director of the Albert Schweitzer Institute, participated in panel discussions with former USSR president Mikhail Gorbachev and Betty Williams of Northern Ireland at the Eighth World Summit of the Nobel Peace Laureates in Rome on Dec. 13 to 15.
Gorbachev and Williams have both received the Nobel Peace Prize. The discussion with Gorbachev addressed "Action Toward Disarmament." The discussion with Williams focused on "Equal Rights in a World of Difference."
The city of Rome and the Gorbachev Foundation bring Nobel Prize recipients together for the annual summit. The Nobel Laureates present the Peace Summit Award to honor an artist who has spread the message of peace. The 2007 recipients are actors Don Cheadle and George Clooney for their work to stop the killing in Darfur, Sudan, and alleviate suffering of victims there.
During the summit, the Nobel Laureates also passed the Charter for a World Without Violence, which they will promote.
