Sports Media

Covering the wide world of sports is an exciting and rewarding career. Sports journalists describe and interpret events from the best seats in the house.

In addition to writing and broadcasting positions, graduates can work in related fields such as sports production, public relations and event planning.

Quinnipiac offers specialized courses and training that prepare students for professional careers in sports. Course topics include:

  • Sports reporting
  • Sports event planning
  • Sports and film
  • Sports radio announcing
  • Sports and society

Sports studies courses complement the foundation and skills courses in media production, journalism, media studies and the liberal arts.

Students also gain valuable work experience outside of the classroom. The campus is a short trip from New York and Boston, two of the leading centers in the sports market, ESPN is close by in Bristol, Conn. Many students have appeared on live broadcasts and earned money as freelancers while still in school. Quinnipiac is the only school in the Northeast promoting student involvement in broadcast production at this level.

You'll also have a chance to gain hands-on training right here on campus. The University fields 21 NCAA Division I varsity teams, providing the perfect opportunity to observe and cover top-notch intercollegiate competition. Students can also help produce broadcasts of Quinnipiac hockey and basketball games--which air on the ESPNU, MSG and NESN networks--gaining valuable experience working side-by-side with professional crews.
