Sexual Assault/Forensic Nurse Examiner Training Program

This seven-week online program, offered every Spring semester, teaches health care professionals how to respond to victims of interpersonal violence. The program is accredited by the Connecticut Nurses Association and offered by Quinnipiac’s nursing department, which was one of the first in the country to offer a master’s degree in nursing with a forensic nurse clinical specialist track.

This program includes two on-campus meetings, plus an on-site clinical requirement. Attendance is mandatory in order to successfully complete this course. The next session will be held March 15 to May 2, 2010.

Students receive 98 contact hours and meet the IAFN requirements for SANE A and SANE P didactic.

Students will learn how to do the following:

  • Identify the dynamics of interpersonal violence
  • Demonstrate the impact of interpersonal violence on victims and their support system
  • Perform a forensic examination of a sexual assault victim
  • Discuss the role of law enforcement and court procedures

To register for the course, you must be one of the following:

  • Physician
  • Nurse practitioner
  • Advanced practice registered nurse
  • Registered nurse
  • Physician assistant
  • Nurse midwife

Certification by the International Association of Forensic Nurses requires an additional clinical component and a standard written examination. You must complete an additional 45 clinical/field work hours to qualify as a SANE A nurse and a total of 75 clinical/field work hours for the SANE A and SANE P nurse.
