Student Programming Board

The Student Programming Board (SPB) is a student-run organization that seeks to enrich Quinnipiac's undergraduate community and build tradition by motivating students to get involved in programming. Using the student voice, SPB provides a diverse array of interactive and entertaining programs. We pride ourselves in creating leadership opportunities for all members, as we recognize that the strength of the organization lies beyond the executive board.

The board is comprised of 13 different positions:

President -- also serves as the vice president of programming for the Student Government Association. The president is responsible for ensuring that all initiatives and goals are met by the executive board as well as serving as a bridge to the administration.

Vice President -- oversees the entire budget of SPB, maintaining communication between the executive and general boards and motivating general members. The VP also works with the annual Programming Academy, which allows general members to program a budgeted weekend event, and leads meetings in the absence of the president.

Mainstage Committee -- programs at least one large-scale performance per academic year featuring comedians, bands or other musical groups as determined through a campus-wide survey. Past performances include: Yellowcard, Matchbook Romance, Sugarcult, T-Pain, Jack's Mannequin, Cartel, Hellogoodbye and Ludacris.

Film Committee -- organizes a campus film series throughout the year. The majority of these films are blockbusters and are not yet available in video stores.

Travel Committee -- responsible for planning an array of trips to cities including Boston and New York City. Trips include Broadway shows, sporting events, whitewater rafting and various performances. SPB surveys students to gauge where they want to go and tickets are limited, but open to all undergraduate students.

Arts and Entertainment Committee -- programs events for the undergraduate student body including stand-up comedians, hypnotists, magicians and illusionists. Recently, the nationally-known chainsaw juggler Mad Chad packed the complex courtyard with more than 300 students in attendance.

Multicultural Committee -- programs events that help promote cultural awareness on the Quinnipiac campus. Events have included: Vampire Tales, Diversity Game show, Copacabana and a Renaissance Fair fit to the campus community.

Novelties Committee -- programs at least two events each semester, including one large-scale event called The Bobcat Bounce. This event includes several inflatables, food and co-sponsorship opportunities. The Novelties Committee has also been involved with Sigma Phi Epsilon's Hall Wars since 2006. Other past events have included an indoor carnival, indoor ice-skating and gaming tournaments.

Special Events Committee -- programs events that are philanthropy-related and also educate students about the cause. Events also include the annual Mr. Quinnipiac Pagent and the Powder Puff tournament, as well as other events under the category of special events and traditions.

Promotions Committee -- responsible for assisting other event chairs with event promotions outside the norm, including stunts, giveaways and creating a buzz on campus about the event. In order to increase awareness the promotions committee also utilizes the SPB Web site, a Facebook account and a screen name to relay information to the student body. The promotions committee also heads the Bobcat Blitzers, a group of fanatic students selected to promote and inform the campus through their high-energy promotions.

Talks and Topics Committee -- responsible for programming a variety of lectures that are both educational and entertaining. Past lectures include Funny Money "Fun-nancial seminar" and MTV's Rock the Vote campaign featuring Syrus and Brooke from the Real World.

Technical Committee -- trains students on technical equipment to assist in meeting any technical requirements for programs sponsored by both SPB and other organizations.

Adviser -- SPB's adviser is Johnny Stinchon, who holds a BA in English from Eastern Connecticut State University and an MS in educational leadership with a focus in student affairs administration from Florida International University. Johnny's true joy is working with the student programming board and seeing their successes.

SPB's general membership is comprised of more than 75 active members who help in the planning and organization of all SPB events. They are also responsible for organizing the two theme weeks throughout the year. SPB offers free food and giveaways during the annual Oktoberfest Celebration and the Deep Freeze Week as well as other events. Membership is growing each year as the programs and events are taken to new heights, with the student body's requests and input SPB can better provide the campus with great entertainment.

SPB meets are every Monday at 4 p.m. in SC 207. You can contact the SPB office at 203-582-8477, by e-mail at SPB@quinnipiac.edu, on the Web site at www.spbwhatsup.com or by IM on SPB's screen name: SPB whats up. We hope to hear from you!
