Extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover for 2008 and 2009

In October 2008, the U.S. Congress approved an extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. It sets forth a process by which a person may instruct the trustee of his or her individual retirement account (IRA) to make a direct contribution to a qualifying charity.
The law is identical to the provision contained in the Pension Protection Act of 2006.

It is important that your IRA custodian know that the distribution must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2008, if you wish the gift to qualify for exclusion from your income in 2008.
