The psychobiology major is an interdisciplinary course of study that emphasizes the biological and social foundations of behavior. The sciences of biology and psychology have currently entered into exciting new eras. New knowledge that will change many scientific understandings is now understood or within reach, such as the uncovering of the genome, embryonic cell development and the new understandings of the functions of the brain and how it changes with experience.
New sophisticated technology has changed the face of what we know and can know. The study of biology and psychology, with emphasis on behavior, genetics and molecular biology, is positioned to help create revolutions of understandings that are expected to improve the quality of human life. It is no surprise that the psychology-biological sciences are at the forefront of many of today's most challenging and social concerns and job opportunities.
The BS in psychobiology places major emphasis on understanding the biological bases of behavior. Psychobiologists are interested in studying the interplay of the brain and biology. The curriculum has been designed to meet the needs of students interested in the biological and behavioral sciences and prepare them for graduate study and professional work in fields such as neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, behavior genetics, ethnology and psychopharmacology. The program is especially appropriate for students planning graduate study and careers in medicine, dentistry, nutrition, law, research or related sciences. The psychobiology major is an excellent preparation for admission into health professional schools.
