Minor in Latin American Studies

A Unique, Interdisciplinary Minor
The minor in Latin American studies combines the study of Latin America's vital and diverse business, cultural, economic, health, media and political environments as part of an interdisciplinary program of studies.

An estimated 25 million Latin Americans and their descendants live in the United States. This program explores the critical link between Latin America and the U.S. by exposing students to a variety of Latin American topics, highlighting the region’s perspectives and traditions, expanding language instruction in the University, and promoting greater diversity on the Quinnipiac University campus.

The interdisciplinary minor offers classroom work, internship and study abroad experience to students seeking a deeper understanding of Latin America and its relationship to the United States and the world.

This unique course of study through various academic disciplines broadens students’ understanding of the remarkable diversity of Latin America and prepares them to enter the fields of foreign service, international trade and finance, teaching, Hispanic media and communications, as well as to pursue graduate studies.

Across the Schools
Team-taught by professors from the College Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Communications and the School of Health Sciences, the program includes a cornerstone course and capstone course, each of which include topics from these schools. In addition, the many elective courses integrate social sciences and humanities with science (ecology, health sciences), business (finance, marketing and trade) and communication.

Study Abroad
The study abroad component of the program offers students a unique opportunity to develop a multicultural approach to problem solving and a view of the global consequences of decision making. Tailored to students' career needs, the experience consists either of a semester of studies at a University based in Latin America or a short-term summer or winter program conducted by faculty of Quinnipiac University at a host institution in Latin America.

Internship
Students in the program are expected to participate in an internship with a Latin American organization or an American organization doing business with Latin America. This reinforces experiential learning and provides students the opportunities to use their knowledge of Latin America in a practical, real-life setting.

How to Sign Up

  • Begin by registering for and completing the cornerstone course, which appears in the course bulletin as LAS 201. Check with your school adviser or Professor Mario Norbis if you have questions.
  • At the same time, begin taking Spanish so that you can complete prerequisite Spanish courses before your last semester in the LAS program.
  • After completing the above, take three elective courses (nine credits) offered in a range of topic areas. A list of qualifying courses will be given to you during the cornerstone course. This list is also available from Professor Norbis.
  • Next, begin exploring the possibilities for two important activities: your study abroad and internship. One of these two activities is required in Track 1. You can complete your study abroad by choosing an elective course that includes a trip to a Latin American country or is offered in a Latin American country. You also can combine your study abroad with an internship in a Latin American country.
  • Finally, register for and complete the capstone course, LAS 450.
