Taking Courses

QUOnline

What is QUOnline?
QU Online offers courses via the Internet. Courses do not meet on campus for class. Your classroom is the Internet. You’ll learn from reading assignments, online presentations designed by the professor and lively discussions with classmates where everyone shares insights and comments about issues. You’ll take exams online and submit written assignments.

What is an online course like?
As in traditional classroom courses, textbooks are the primary reading source for online courses. Blackboard, a Web-based learning system, is your gateway to online learning. Your professor will give you assignments and tell you when they are due by posting this information on Blackboard. You will access Blackboard through Quinnipiac’s Web site by entering a username and password.

Blackboard is easy to use and allows you to do so much:

  • Download reading materials, project assignments and the course syllabus
  • Download and view PowerPoint presentations and videos created by your professor
  • Submit assignments
  • Read and share comments in a discussion forum with your classmates and professor
  • Take quizzes and exams
  • Send (and receive) e-mail to your classmates and professor

Is the quality of education different in an online course than a traditional classroom course?
No. Professors teaching our online courses are the same professors who teach courses on campus, and our online courses are accredited.

Who can take QU Online courses?
Anyone, including current Quinnipiac students. Courses don’t meet on campus, so they are convenient for business travelers, people who work full time and parents.

Do I need extensive technology training?
Basic computer skills are all you need for our courses. You need to know how to use the Internet, e-mail and Microsoft Office programs, primarily Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

What technology equipment do I need?

  • A computer
  • An Internet connection (high-speed access recommended, such as cable or DSL)
  • Latest version of Internet Explorer Web browser (We support only Internet Explorer. Please do not use AOL, Netscape, Firefox or other Web browsers.)
  • An e-mail account provided by the University
  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint (available for downloading from Quinnipiac’s Web site or you can purchase a CD of all three programs for $10 on campus)

We recommend these two programs to protect your computer, but they are not required:

  • Virus protection software such as McAfee VirusScan or Norton AntiVirus (available for free download by students from Quinnipiac’s Web site)
  • Microsoft Windows Defender for spyware protection (free download from Microsoft)

What courses and programs does QU Online offer?
We offer undergraduate and graduates courses, degrees in organizational leadership, a program that certifies you to teach math, and a forensic program for health care professionals.

How many online courses can I take per semester?
No more than seven online credit hours per semester without permission from the dean in your school. If you are not a Quinnipiac student, contact QU Online at 203-582-KNOW (5669) or quonline@quinnipiac.edu.

How many credits can I earn by taking an online course?
Online courses offer the same credits as traditional on-campus courses. The number depends on the course, usually three credits.

How will online courses appear on my transcript?
The course will appear like a traditional on-campus course.

Is QU Online accredited?
Yes. QU Online falls under Quinnipiac’s accreditation for traditional courses.

How do I contact QU Online?
Write to quonline@quinnipiac.edu or call 203-582-KNOW (5669).

What do students who have taken online courses say about the quality of education?
Lots of good things. Read what they say.

You can sende-mail, post a message in the discussion board in Blackboard or call his or her office. Professors provide contact information in Blackboard and on the course syllabus.

Does class ever meet on campus?
Almost always no but sometimes the professor might schedule a meeting on campus to go over material; however, this is rare. Courses in the College of Professional Studies combine online learning with some on-campus classroom learning.

How do science labs work online?
QU Online provides special software to solve problems and discuss research results without meeting in a laboratory. Professors use video, graphics and PowerPoint presentations to give students visual instruction.

Yes. The preferred way is to go to https://quvpn.quinnipiac.edu/webvpn.html and log in by entering your username and password for e-mail.

The second way is to set up your computer to dial directly to Quinnipiac’s network. A dial-up network must be installed on your machine. The remote dial-up access number is 203-927-4820. For more information, contact Quinnipiac’s Help Desk at 203-582-4357.
