Facebook’s decision to combat gun sales
Social media expert Rich Hanley, associate professor and director of the graduate journalism program in the School of Communications, is available to talk to the media about Facebook's decision to delete posts offering to buy or sell guns without background checks.
"Facebook's decision extends its prohibitions against gun advertisements in individual posts," Hanley said. "The immediate impact will be to force individuals who wish to sell guns via individual posts to create euphemisms and other textual devices to work around the ban but the net impact will be to make it difficult to traffic in firearms through Facebook. The clear decision by Facebook underscores its increasing power to influence the marketplace of things if not ideas online as more and more interactions of all kinds occur in this space."
