January 21, 2004 - Rowland Should Quit Or Be Removed By Legislature, Connecticut Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; 48 Percent Of Republicans Now Say He Should Resign
Gov. John Rowland must go, either by resignation or by action of the State Legislature, Connecticut voters say in a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
  • The Governor should resign, voters say 68 - 23 percent, compared to 56 - 34 percent in a January 7 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. In this latest poll Republicans say 48 - 44 percent Rowland should resign.
  • The State Legislature should impeach and remove Rowland, voters say 56 - 33 percent, compared to a 46 - 42 percent margin against removal January 7.
Rowland's negative 24 - 68 percent approval rating is down from 28 - 62 percent January 7. Only 40 percent of Republicans approve of the job the Governor is doing.

Only 11 percent of voters say he is honest and trustworthy. And 89 percent are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" that Rowland misled them.

"Gov. Rowland's situation is so bad, even his Republican support is melting away," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.

From January 18 - 20, Quinnipiac University surveyed 880 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and the nation as a public service and for research.
