April 1, 2004 - Rowland's Republican Support Erodes, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; As Calls For Governor's Ouster Hit New High
By a 70 - 25 percent margin, Connecticut voters say Gov. John Rowland should resign, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Republican voters say 59 - 36 percent that the Governor should step down.

This compares to a 67 - 27 percent margin for Rowland's resignation, including 51 - 38 percent among Republicans, in a February 19 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Connecticut voters say 55 - 35 percent that the State Legislature should impeach and remove Rowland, virtually unchanged in the last two months.

Rowland's negative 25 - 67 percent approval rating compares to a negative 24 - 69 percent score in the February 19 poll. In this current survey, voters say:
  • 84 - 10 that Rowland is not honest and trustworthy;
  • 59 - 36 percent that Rowland's refusal to resign is hurting the state;
  • 70 - 26 percent that he has lost the ability to govern effectively.
"Public pressure for Gov. Rowland's resignation has inched up to a new high, as support among his fellow Republicans continues to slip away. Every subgroup lines up against Rowland," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.

From March 28 - 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,244 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and the nation as a public service and for research.
